What can I expect from therapy?

All Palmetto Counseling clients can expect to work with a licensed mental health professional within a safe, welcoming environment. Our counselors specialize in various therapy and treatment types as well as specific challenges and disorders to support every client’s unique needs.

Once you’ve selected a therapist whose areas of focus align with yours, you’ll start by simply getting to know one another and building trust. Sharing what you’re hoping to accomplish through therapy early on is very helpful to determining treatment, but discussing difficult experiences and emotions will follow your pace.

Above all, you will be met with compassion, carefully listened to, and led down a path tailored specifically to your growth.

What if my experiences don’t constitute seeking help?

Our practice as a whole firmly believes that therapy can benefit everyone. In fact, our therapists seek therapy themselves!

Deciding to start therapy can be scary, but we take pride in our commitment to meeting every client who walks through our doors without judgment. We view the desire to improve your well-being positively in all cases, and our centers offer a safe space to feel heard and supported in any emotion or experience.

All Palmetto therapists believe your experiences are valid, no matter what they are, and that seeking help is always warranted.

How can I determine which therapist is right for me?

It is deeply important to us that our clients feel comfortable confiding in their therapist, as a secure client-therapist relationship is essential for effective, long-term treatment.

In turn, all Palmetto Counseling therapists have been carefully selected due to their innate connection to this work and way of viewing this path as a calling rather than a decision.

We recommend visiting our Team Page to read through each of our therapists’ professional bios to learn more about their background, specialized treatment modalities, experienced areas of focus, and last but surely not least, their personalities!

As you explore who speaks to you, know that we are fully confident that whomever you work with at Palmetto will treat you with the same level of respect, compassion, and dedication to your growth.

How often are therapy sessions, and how long does therapy typically last?

Session frequency, session length, and treatment duration are all determined on an individual basis. After setting your initial consultation with your therapist, you will work together to determine the best course of treatment and session frequency.

The duration of treatment is highly personalized and determined on a case-by-case basis. Each client’s counseling journey has a unique outcome and, therefore, a unique pace.

What if I don’t know which counseling service is right for me?

We recommend reading through our therapists’ bios to first see who you’re drawn to and their varying specialties. Once you’ve made your first appointment, we encourage you to reflect on why you’re seeking therapy and in what areas you’re hoping to improve.

Bringing these topics to your therapist initially will help to determine the recommended service/treatment modality suited for you.

Is therapy confidential?

At Palmetto Counseling, we uphold confidentiality as a top priority. Your therapist will keep all information shared in your sessions confidential unless what’s shared poses harm to you and/or others. Additionally, all Palmetto therapists are bound by a strict code of ethics and professional standards that they must follow.

Do you accept insurance?

We strive to accommodate as many clients as possible and accept most major forms of insurance as well as Medicare, Tricare, a variety of EAPs, and FSA in most cases. The option to self-pay through pre-paid packages is also available. For more information, visit our Rates & Insurance page.

If your question or concern is not listed, please contact our team. Accessibility to our care is extremely important to us!

How much will my insurance cover?

Before requesting an appointment, we recommend contacting your insurance company to verify that our practice is considered “In-Network” with your plan. If your insurance requires a referral prior to seeing a Specialist, please contact your Primary Care Physician so that you have the referral in hand at the time of your visit.

As a courtesy (and with your permission), Palmetto Counseling will contact your insurance company to verify benefits for outpatient behavioral healthcare services to determine your co-pay, co-insurance, and the amount of your deductible that must be met before insurance will reimburse for treatment services provided.

We strongly advise that you also contact your insurance company to verify your benefits. If your claim is denied by your insurance company, you will be responsible for the full amount of all professional fees and charges for services provided.

Does insurance cover marriage or couples counseling?

Unfortunately, marriage and couples counseling is considered non-medical/non-clinical and is not covered by major insurance plans. However, clients may use FSA/HSA for couples counseling and, if the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) authorizes couples’ sessions, clients can use EAP for couples counseling.

What are your hours?

Sessions are by appointment only. Evening and Saturday appointments are available.

If you are a new patient, please get started here to request an appointment through our website. This method is much faster than calling the office as it provides our Front Desk with the information required to register as a new patient. We look forward to meeting you!

If you are an active client, please use our Client Portal to schedule an appointment, check in, reschedule, cancel, send a secure message to your provider, or pay for your appointments at your convenience, without the need to call the office.

Why does your practice charge a no-show fee?

Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you. If you miss your appointment or cancel at the last minute, we will be unable to provide care for another client in your place and have no way of recovering lost revenue due to “no-shows” or last-minute cancellations.

Therefore, it is our policy that clients provide us with 48-hour advanced notice if you need to change or cancel your appointment. You may be charged a $70 administrative fee for canceling your appointment without providing 24 hours advanced notice and/or missing your appointment.

Can a social worker or a licensed counselor prescribe medication?

No. However, we may recommend that you receive a medication evaluation from your doctor/psychiatrist/primary care physician.

Some mental health conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, and mood disorders, are better treated with counseling and medication therapy, than just counseling alone.
